Parish Nurse PDF Print E-mail

altA Parish Nurse may mean something different to each person that hears the words and to each nurse who attempts to be one.   Our Parish Nurse will come along side those who feel the need for an advocate within the health system, to serve as a referral agent for services and resources, to help everyone to strive for their best health as a health educator, and in the role for health promotion to encourage effective choices.  Some other roles that some Parish nurses have are: counselor (our Parish has Liza Simental-Rudolph); coordinator of volunteers and integrator of faith.

Cecilia Freeman, R.N. is  a volunteer in her role as Parish Nurse.  There are 63 individuals in this role in Tippecanoe County; some are staff members and others are volunteers in their parishes.  In some parishes, multiple nurses have completed the basic program.  We have educational meetings and a mentor program and plan clinics.

It is our goal to promote a Health Ministry in our parish.  We are blessed to have many health professionals, and others, who are willing to provide care, comfort, and compassion for those in need.  We can practice a kindness ministry at Blessed Sacrament that is inclusive.

Visualize three circles, one inside the other.  In the inner circle, is each person made up of body, mind, and spirit.  There must be balance within the individual.   Around that inner circle is another circle, in which all the relationships are arranged like petals of a flower.  In the outer circle, we are surrounded by the finances that sustain us.  This is the model I use for assessing the physical, psychological, spiritual, relational, and financial state of well being for each person.   The best health occurs when there is harmony in all five areas.  That is ideal and rarely occurs in anyone for very long, because life events happen.

Office hours: Mondays and Fridays, 9 – 12 noon; Tuesdays 1 - 4.  You may also call for an appointment at other times.  Visits for those who can not come to the parish office can be arranged.
